[TheForge] drum opening tool

Yeah, the "what was in the drum" issue is definately present. Most times, the stuff would be highly flammable. A low-speed, low-temp mechanical opener is very appealing.
As the patent points out, a chisel leaves a rough edge unless you're VERY good.
Of couse, a roller cutter would be even better than this tool, if you could contrive one that worked. (Like an enormous electric can-opener.)

Bruce, I bet I almost as fast taking the top out of a 5 gallon (or 55
gallon) drum with a good sharp cold chisel and a hammer. Try it -- you
might be surprised. Plasma torch is fast too but not everyone has one of
these -- plus the issue of what was in the drum. -- Not that a cold chisel
is risk free -- because it may not be spark free. In college I worked in a
small chemical plant that had once burned to the ground because a leaking
drum of ether ran into a sump pump -- follow by an explosion when the pump
came on.

Actually, that's a rather neat tool. Like a big can opener.

I printed the picture from the patent (long since expired). I may have use
for one of these. I can get 5 gal chemical containers free for the taking,
and they'd make good gas forge bodies. But cutting out the ends was an
issue and this might be the solution.
