It sounds like Jim found your item. To answer how to look it up, you can 
do so on the US Patent and Trademark Office web page. Here is a link to 
the page that allows searching patents:
http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html
You would click on "Patent Number Search" and go from there.
When you find your patent, it is old enough that it is only available in 
image format. The USPTO uses TIFF format; you almost certainly need to 
install a TIFF viewer. They explain how to do this here:
