Looks like Jim found it for you.

Of all the patent servers since the IBM server went to 
a pay status I like the Google patent search best. You 
don't need a special reader like you do for the US 
Patent and Trademark server. It also seems to go back 
quite a ways farther. It's easier to use and seems less 
sensitive to the country of registry.

When you just have a number with no country designator 
you may have to add one to find the item. For instance 
you may needed to add <US> or <UK> or <EU>, etc. in 
front of the number to search the right patents.

This is less true for the last 50-75 years though, most 
things are patented everywhere but if it's older than 
that you may have to search for the right country's 
patent registry.
