I used to have an air switch on my Sewer machine, it went bad and I 
could not find a reasonably priced replacement the weekend I needed the 
machine, so built one like you describe.   I really preferred the air 
switch as when you are standing in several inches of water, it is good 
to have all of your electrical connections off of the floor.   I put 
mine in a waterproof case and put a military surplus water proof switch 
in it, as well as making up a GFCI extension cord using another 
waterproof enclosure to use with it, but now that I know of a cheap 
(relatively) source for a new air switch, I will probably order one.
