[TheForge] Trip Hammer Report (Longish)

Andy and Bob,
On Sid's website there is an instruction sheet that was apparently sent out from the factory with new LGs. It says, among other things:
"When hammer leaves factory, crosshead is set so that dies are approximately 1" apart when crank pin is at lowest center. This is approximately the correct adjustment for general work from nothing up to 2" diameter or 3" wide flats when place under hammer edgewise."
Based on your experience, it sounds like you may not agree with this. Correct? You find that about 1 1/2" from the top die to work piece is better?
Aubrey

I'd have to second Bob on this one- once I got the hammer spring right (so
the toggle arms are almost horizontal, very little sag) it's almost always
about not having the height set correctly. I have a chunk of 2x4 that I keep
on a leash on the hammer- in other words, the top die wants to be 1 1/2" off
the work at the bottom of its stroke.
Works for me.
