I agree that it's a good starting point.
I also think that the speed you are running your hammer (more or less
pressure on the treadle) has a relationship to the fluttering. The LG
spring compresses both when the ram goes up and when it goes down but
if you try to go full speed the linkage doesn't have time to react to
one force before another is applied. So it gets confused and flutters.
Try going slower and see if the fluttering goes away.
I just looked at mine and the top die is about 1" from the bottom die
when the crank is all the way down. I don't move it very often.
