Andy,

Are you saying that if you are forging 1" stock you want the top die 2 1/2" from the bottom die?  Right now, I think mine is more like 1" between top and bottom dies!  That may be the source of a lot of my problems.

I'll play with that some after I get the thing bolted down to the wooden pad I made for it.

I'd have to second Bob on this one- once I got the hammer spring right (so
the toggle arms are almost horizontal, very little sag) it's almost always
about not having the height set correctly. I have a chunk of 2x4 that I keep
on a leash on the hammer- in other words, the top die wants to be 1 1/2" off
the work at the bottom of its stroke.
Works for me.
