Saint:  Actually, 5160 will heat-treat pretty much the same as 1095, as it
is low alloy.  The small amount chromium does not boost the required
hardening temperature.  My wife prefers my FPTK to her 100.00+ Henckels
small chef...stays sharper longer.  Try it Saint...you'll love it.  Harden
in room temp quenching oil, temper immediately at 450f until dark bronze.

I'm hoping it's 1095, personally, because you're a bit modern for me
;-) I need to work in simple steels, although I've been researching
"accidental" stainless steels and various inclusions, depending on the
mine the iron came from. My thought for this stock is to use it as the
edge inserts in wrought blade bodies. Since my right arm (and
occasionally my apprentices) are my power hamers, the fact that it's
small is all to the good. And, I should have plenty to play with (and
undoubtedly screw up)- I figure unwound, it ought to add up to 30 or
40 linear feet. The nature of the springs, too, leads me to believe
that it shouldn't suffer much from cracking- I just don't think this
spring was under high, variable stress like car springs can be.
