Sounds like you have garage door, torsion- spring.  Hammer some into 
c-shaped flint-steel strikers and quench them in ice-cold water.   If 
they are 1095 steel, the flint steel striker should almost break like 
glass if dropped on concrete, but give a very hot spark when struck 
against good flint.

I've seen some ornate little bodice knives made from torsion door 
spring.  Those might be a hit with the SCA women.
