With respect.

The clinker will build up in the bottom of the fire pot until the level of
the clinker then occludes the tuyere.  Like overflowing a bowl with a hole
in the side of it.  The clinker breaker breaks up the clinker before it gets
big enough to be a huge problem.

Still the higher up air inlet will work, if one tears apart the fire often
enough.  Huge pieces of clinker can stick to the firepot and be hard to
remove<G>.
