A shipmate of mine was in maneuvering (reactor / power plant control
room) when the shaft parted, he said he knew something was really
wrong when water started coming out of vent duct grill outside
maneuvering. As I said it did not pull all the way out but it did rip
the seals out. Only some real fast thinking and heroic efforts saved
the boat. The engine room lower level watch had reported finding sand
in the bilge a few days before the incident, the Engineer said it
must have been brought on board by some of the crew when they were in
port as it could not possibly be coming from the shaft, he lost his
job. Rob must have been pretty early in his career when he saw this
as this happened thirty years ago, it was the mid seventies when I
was but a nub in Uncle Sam's yacht club.
