Ah... sand as telltale. Very clever.

Sand primarily dampens sound and vibration, but is a secondary telltale.

But the shaft didn't fail at a coupling. I forgot to mention that
there was evidence of intense heat. Thermal discoloration of the shaft
and buring of the area close to it. Nobody noticed the event, perhaps
because the alley isn't a common hangout.

He says then, that it would have failed as a result of a stress riser, and
that does/can look perfectly even.

In this case, the alphabet soup may have arrived, thinking it was evidence of
smuggling, and enjoined everyone to secrecy because they may have either been
investigating smugglers using this method, or considering the law abiding
bubbas in CIA. etc, using that method in some project.

Don't like getting old? Beats the Hel out of the alternative.

The purpose of life is not to arrive at the grave, a beautiful corpse, pretty
and well-preserved, but to slide in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally
worn out, proclaiming, "Wow! What a ride!"
