You might want to be careful and make sure that all the parts are cast iron.
Sometimes old equipment has cast aluminum or pot metal for some of the
components. These will melt at a lot lower heat than the iron.
I personally would go at it with a putty knife. That will remove the bulk
of the gunk pretty fast and then you can clean up with a solvant. Removing
the paint is another problem, but once it's clean you may not need to strip
the paint.
