[TheForge] To ring or not to ring[was anvil i d]

Rebound is what counts. It's the return of energy to the hammer and applies
force to the underside of the piece being worked.

The ring is how the anvil expresses the wasted energy caused by lateral
movement in the anvil. An anvil that doesn't ring is still wasting energy
(unavoidable) it's just less annoying about it.

As to which anvils will or won't ring, the wrought body vs. cast body factor
isn't the answer. My cast body, steel faced Sodorfors would ring your ears
through doubled, plugs and muffs, hearing protection if I hadn't taken pains
to damp the ring.

I don't know what factors do determine when a good quality anvil will or
won't ring though. As I don't plan on producing a line of anvils I think
I'll hold off on the indepth research as well. <grin>

If it ain't forged
it ain't real.
Wrought iron is.
