Hmmm...
I guess that way you avoid getting musty old cork in your port, and
only get razor-sharp slivers of glass in it instead...

Proper old port (wine) is likely to have a cork that is a bit past it.
Rather than trying to remove it and risk dropping bits in the wine,
the
traditional method is to remove the neck of the bottle. This is done
with
port tongs, which are a close fit around the neck of the port bottle.
They're heated red hot, then applied to the bottle for a moment,
whereupon
nothing happens until (traditionally, again) a wet feather is touched
onto
the hot bit to crack the bottle neck off.

Geez, we do it all the time over here ;-)
