Jonathan, the 4316 doesn't mean much to me, but if you looking at Stainless
as an option of what it might be - the 316 is a molybednum alloy which is
used in marine and food service industry.

So, I suppose my mystery metal is actually stainless steel. I was able to
run a nice fused bead with my tig welder. As I understand it MONEL does not
weld. Is that correct?

The only thing I am surprised by is the "oxide" on the surface of the bars,
brownish. NOt what I would expect from Stainless. Also, I sanded the
surfaces of the 2 small pieces and the area near the weld turned a light
brown, with no hint of blue or grey.

There is a number stamped near one end, 4316. Does that indicate anything to
any of you?
