All of the on saw butt welders that I have used have a post weld "anneal".
You shear the ends of the saw blade and position them in the holders and
then weld. After the weld then you hit the current again and it brings the
weld area and about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch on each side of the weld up to a
good red heat. Then you grind each side of the weld to remove the flash
from the butt weld. All of the DoAll Bandsaws that we used had this type of
set up. I see no reason you couldn't do the same things with a tig weld,
followed by use of a torch to post heat the weld area and grind. I don't
think it matter if you grind or anneal first. (Strictly speaking it is not
an anneal but a normalize, since it is an air cool, but you get the idea.)
