I'll step in here, as I are of the farrier persuasion ;)

Turning shoes is an expression for hand making them.  Rounding hammers are
also refered to as turning hammers.

When I was in shoeing school at Olympia Tech in '83 the professor (Bill
Miller) was and likely still is, involved in international stuff.  Had a
group of Japanese farriers and vets in for a visit.  The champ Japanese
horseshoer made a half dozen or so shoes with 5 nail holes per branch, out
of 1/4" x 3/4" stock.  When done you could stack those 6-8 shoes and see
light through each nail hole.  Really impressive. (but nothing that I ever
aspired to, jeesh!)
