Dear Bill,
  The crown sheet was rusted away until it was very thin, I think as 
little as .040 thick in some places, then the engine was parked at an 
angle on the side of the road, allowing the thin sheet to be exposed 
directly to the fire. The sheet overheated and let go of the stays.

A proper inspection would have revealed the thin plates. Very sad, and 
entirely preventable.
