Dan, 

He heated the bar and worked it with the hammer and anvil to remove the
voids, slag, etc. (Refining according to JB). He formed a flat bar, split
the edge with a chisel, then forged welded a pc of hc steel into the split.
He then forged the blade to shape and finished it.
