Ron,

Can't say I'm all that experienced with wrought iron either, but I recall
Daryl Nelson forging with wrought window sash weights saying it was
constantly having to be forge welded togther because the strains were coarse
as spaghetti, and coming apart at the same time it was sticking together.

 When the gvt is involved there *can* be some weird stuff in defense
 contracts. It was the gvt that paid the tab, not the shipyard-

 Some of the old anchor chain was wrought iron- does anyone know
 when its use
 was discontinued? Never forged any of it, but heard it is a joy to work.
