Actually, that was Phil who made that comment- I was asking what he used
instead.
As it stands, a friend is sending me a Skilsaw I'm going to put an abrasive
blade in, and we will see what we will see. And, since I've been looking, my
friend Art, who runs the scrap yard, has a bandsaw he's willing to sell for
$25, and I'm to take a look at it Monday. If I want it, next trick is to
come up with $25 ;-)
I don't really need to do precision machining- keep in mind, folks, that I
am an actual blacksmith, and I basicly need something to cut steel fast when
I need multiple pieces in heavier stock. I do all the shaping with a hammer,
an anvil, a forge, and some creative cussing- if I need specific tools, I
can generally scrounge them or make them for the project- like the punches
I'm making for the rope locks for my shelter, or the 10 combo tent stakes/
guard ropes I made to tie my shelter down and simultaneously keep the
flatlander touristers out of my forge at the RennFaire.
The fun, for me, is figuring out how they would have done something like
this in my period of study- the power stuff is because once I've figured
that out, I'm a lazy git ;-)
Oh, and btw, Mikey, I'm very much enjoying your book. While it's a bit
modern for what I'm trying to accomplish, it's providing me with very useful
information for getting people started up thumping steel, no matter where
they live ;-)

"When in doubt, heat it up and hit it with a hammer."
Blacksmith's credo.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is probably not a
cat.
Never a horse that cain't be rode,
And never a rider who cain't be throwed....
