Yeah, the original uninsulated tanks picked up several tons of ice that 
broke off during launch which they anticipated might damage the tiles, maybe 
fatally.

There have been a couple other environmentally "friendly" changes imposed on 
the shuttle. The original silicone calk-like "glue" used to hold the tiles 
in place was deemed enviromentally unsafe and was changed. Just because the 
original "glue" tended to survive strikes from falling ice unlike the new 
stuff which won't stand up to what is essentially urethane foam hitting it 
is no reason to change either. <sigh>

Perhaps I should just go plant my crops with a pointy stick and change the 
leaves on my cave floor.
