Try running BoostXP.  I Just started using it and fon't have a strong 
opinionon it yet, but it will clean up your disk.  Fragmentation will 
eventually impact perfomrance significantly.

If you don't have ZoneAlarm installed, install it, let it run, and when 
it notifies you that program 'X' is trying to access the internet, click 
on "Allow" but not on "Remember This..." and that way you should be able 
to figure out what program is attempting to dial out in your absence. 
It's a bit crude, but it's free.
