There is a cast iron powder / acetylene torch attachment  that apparently 
does a super job.   I had it described to me, and then saw the results on  
broken antique cast iron rope machine, one that  I didn't  want to risk 
going "bad".   The result was  a solid weld that barely showed, and IMO, 
much better than any nickle / arc  welding or brass brazing  that I have 
seen. 

Reading back on this thread, there was a professional looking cast iron 
welding page web page telling how  cast iron  can be ruined with nickle rod 
and  an arc weld. 

Apparently some cast iron is nastier than others to weld with arc.   I must 
have really lucky with  "good" cast iron,  because I can only remember one 
piece of cast iron that went "bad" for me when arc welding with nickle rod.
