[TheForge] Grinder rollers

Justin, iho, you can use step pulleys and/or build another for the smaller
rollers using a 1750 rpm motor and gear down so as not to turn the small
bearings too fast. It's probably easier to build one for each application
than a system that will accommodate a 1/2" and a 10" wheel. That's if you
like and are adept at building things.... Grizzly sells the 10" wheel for
about $60. The 8" is probably less. If you are platen grinding, you can use
a dolly wheel which already has a crown and a piece of 2" angle for the
platen. The graphite belting sold by Koval works well to silence the noise.
Skate board wheels work ok as idler pulleys, as do automotive idler pulleys.
There are several sites on the internet that have good photos and drawings;

Justin: There are two "gotchas" in knife grinders: The variable speed DC
motors used in the more expensive models, and the contact wheels which
engage the belts. Considerable care must also be used in constructing the
tracking mechanism that positions the belt on the contact wheel. Take a
look at a machine like a Bader III and see how subtly complex the whole rig
is. Grant

There was a thread about belt grinder rollers a while back. Doesn't
seem too hard to make the steel part. Is the problem finding the right
elastomer and then bonding it to the steel? That's the impression I get
reading the thread--been toying with the idea of building a knife
grinder because they're so flippin expensive to buy, but Iam wondering
if there's a hidden gotcha...
