There was a thread about belt grinder rollers a while back. Doesn't
seem too hard to make the steel part. Is the problem finding the right
elastomer and then bonding it to the steel? That's the impression I get
reading the thread--been toying with the idea of building a knife
grinder because they're so flippin expensive to buy, but Iam wondering
if there's a hidden gotcha...

The simplicity is the real beauty of the design. His prices are also
quite reasonable. I built my own, but that was because things were a
bit slow for a week or two.

I had pretty good luck using plastic idler rollers with bearing
pressed into the ends, but now make them out of aluminum so the
bearigns can be replaced.
