Justin:  There are two "gotchas" in knife grinders:  The variable speed DC 
motors used in the more expensive models, and the contact wheels which 
engage the belts.  Considerable care must also be used in constructing the 
tracking mechanism that positions the belt on the contact wheel.  Take a 
look at a machine like a Bader III and see how subtly complex the whole rig

There was a thread about belt grinder rollers a while back. Doesn't
seem too hard to make the steel part. Is the problem finding the right
elastomer and then bonding it to the steel? That's the impression I get
reading the thread--been toying with the idea of building a knife
grinder because they're so flippin expensive to buy, but Iam wondering
if there's a hidden gotcha...
