Thanks for the suggestions, everybody.
Looks good, and she's thrilled.
Andy, that soldering info went right into the "saved from theforge" box-
that's going to come in handy.
I did a lot of silver soldering years ago, too, and I forget what a useful
technique it is- have even used it to fix delicate cast iron filigree on an
old wood cookstove. I think it would have worked, if I had the tools to make
an 85/15 solder...color match was the reason that I didn't use solder of any
kind. A seam is a seam, but these are hairline.
There's a counter in a restaurant in the town where I live (The Adrift- Ries
will know where that is) that looks great until you really check it out. All
done with full sheets, using a full size brake, done by a big local shop. It
does the job, too, but there are a couple things I'd never do- lap seams in
the middle of the counter (looks worse to me than a hairline glued seam) and
the seams are soldered with some kind of super soft solder that looks like
lead and isn't holding up on the butt seams.
The owner is happy and it does the job, the diners oooh and aaah over it,
but that way of doing it wouldn't have been satisfactory in my kitchen. I'd
rather live with lines.
