I suspect it's rather like which way you should point your anvil- if it
works for you and you're happy with it, go for it ;-) You might want to try
a piece of cushioning material, to see if you like it better, but that's
your choice.

I always figured folks used stumps for anvils as a combination of
convenience, and the extra weight. Don't really think there much dampening
effect- I haven't noticed any on my anvils.
