Terry,

The bottom line is that although oxy/propane doubles the expense of the 
oxygen, the savings in fuel cost (acet vs propane) more than 
compensates.  In the end, oxy/propane is cheaper than oxy/acet for cutting 
or general heating or brazing.  So, although you say that you can't argue 
with the chemistry, neither can you argue with the economics.  Remember, 
the additional oxygen consumption is in the burning only for general 
heating and brazing.  When it comes to cutting ... well, it's oxygen that 
does the cutting, not the flame.  So, don't get hung up on the chemistry, 
it's only one small piece of the puzzle.
