Too much preheat can cause problems. You can take the hardness out of 
parts of the face you aren't working on if you heat too high.

I use 300F for preheat; 500 sounds pretty high. As you weld, the temp 
will probably go up from your preheat. If you get too high, you will 
lose your temper. :)
