I attended a lecture given by Al Paley at Skidmore College in Saratoga 
Springs, NY a number of years ago.  It was there I first learned of 
them.  But I didn't know where abouts in the capital they were.  Although I 
live near Albany, I've never managed to get by to see them.

Yes, they are quite different from his current work, which has gotten even 
larger over the years.  One of the techniques he used on those gates was to 
twist ROUND stock.  After repeated twisting it will deform into a very 
organic "vine-like" appearance.
