Most guys start out using recycled material for there projects. Just like
you for making knives. And then they find that this guy wants a knife and
that guy wants a knife and then pretty soon they have no more leaf springs
or files or whatever. So they go down and buy some new 1080 in the correct
dimensions. Then they find out how much faster they can make the knife since
the stock is sized correctly for the intended knife. And they find how much
easier it is to heat treat since they can predict what its going to do and
not guess. Then they start thinking to themselves, to heck with using coil
springs or scrounged stuff for knives, it's just so much easier and more
efficient to buy material. I'm not trying to say that threes anything wrong
with reusing material, just pointing out that depending on a persons
situation it might not be the best thing to do...
