Forge a square taper then make it a flat diamond <> then put the stock in a
vise and twist with flat jawed pliers working out to the tip. Practice on
scrap a few times. I've done this quite a few times having gotten the idea
from a larger screw that I found after cleaning out a fireplace years ago,
that one was about 1/2" in diameter, most of the screws I've made this way
were 1/4 to 3/8". Someday I'll get a call for that 1/2" size and I'll wish
I had kept the piece. Try to keep the spacing even and finish the tip with
a file.
