The last screw hooks I made I used lag screws. Muriatic acid bath to get
rid of the zinc. Then drew the head down and out. There was enough meat
there to make the hook. If you need more meat (i.e. metal for the bone
heads here) <friendly grin> then I'm afraid you'll have to continue with
the welding.
You could always draw out the stock to a 3 or 4 sided taper, flute the
sides and then twist. A uniform twist in tapered stock can be a bear to
do, but it can be done. The fluting will give it more bite. Just don't
make the twist too tight because you'll be working 3 or 4 spirals in the
screw instead of the single spiral in a typical screw.
