Larry,

There is a good bit on buying anvils here 
http://www.beautifuliron.com/gs_anvils.htm The new imported anvils are 
very nice.

If you hang out at your local abana chapter meetings you will meet up 
with an anvil soon enough. Don't get into a bidding war with an antique 
dealer or an architect looking for something to decorate his office 
(this happened). Look for anvils where they hang out.

In the mean time don't discount a piece of rail or just a large chuck 
from the scrapyard or your local weld shop.
