Hey Norm,
I disagree about the outside liner just being necessary to act as a mold to
form the castable.
I always use metal with a wall thick enough to weld fittings to, such as
burner brackets , hinged doors, lifting eyes and legs or bottom supports.
I have also started using stainless shells for some customers.
On the first test firing any hot spots in the skin, discolor and show you
exactly where to beef up the insulation.
The straight sided SS beer kegs make good cheap shells for large forges.
