"someth~1" won't get you anything particularly useful. That's simply how
the 8-character-filename-limited 16-bit DOS and Win3.x operating systems
handle the long filenames of Win9x and beyond. The first file they find
in a directory starting with the 6 letters "someth" is seen with ~1
appended, the second, ~2, etc.

Are you running any recovery software (similar to Norton Utilities) or
optimization software that may have created the directory in response to=20
a problem? Or after _causing_ the problem? Is this a compressed drive,=20
by any chance?
