Mike; The 6013 should give you a flat, smooth weld like the 7018... 
maybe even flatter.  When using little dinky rods like that, I like to 
cut them in half and chip out a new bare spot to put in the stinger. The 
don't spring around so much. When you get the right amp setting and a 
decently tight arc on  even moderately clean material it should work 
fine. Sounds like you might be running too low on the power...short arc 
and brisk travel speed. Once it's running right, 6013 is pretty 
forgiving...oh...that's a "downhand" rod...much easier to run down 
flat..skip the overhead on that one.....you'll get hot dingleberrys in 
the armpits and up the nose...not good.
