I'm not much of a weldor -- determined hack at best -- but I've used
1\16" stainless rod with fair to good results.  A more skilled hand
might do real well.  It's the only rod I can find in 1\16" except 6013
(which doesn't give "nice smooth appearance".)

[Pardon the "\" in the fractions.  The slash\questionmark key on my
keyboard just died.  Say!  Does anybody have an old "IBM Personal
Computer AT" 84-key keyboard they'd part with (questionmark) That
would be from, say, a 80286 circa mid 80s.  Email me terms off list.]
