I have been following that show in addition to the two specials that
featured Jessie James from the west coast. I have noticed that the working
conditions might be the 21 century equivalent of a 19th century blacksmith
shop. There is no management insulation between the 'masters' and the rest
of the workers... no filtering of disputes in style and design... if there
is a problem you face it in real time... and in the case of both shop on the
TV series it seems that if something doesn't work it is likely to be
launched across the shop and something else worked out right now!
I can't remember the name of the shop, but there is a Harley chopper shop in
the West Bend, WI area. I believe the prop. is George Schwartz... he has
done trikes and rebuilds for clients all around the world...will try to find
out some more for you

Subject: [TheForge] sorta OT- "Choppers" motocycle shop tv show

Has anyone been watching "Choppers", a tv show (Discovery channel?) about a
father son custom motorcycle workshop, called Orange County Choppers?
Bill and I have really been enjoying this show. The metalwork is great, all
fabricated, so well designed and executed. I love seeing how the son
visualizes and works out his designs, almost no sketching that I can see.
He has it all in his head, works it out aesthetically and technically with
the way the motorcycle has to run and ride.

This is by no means in my life plan right now- but this show makes me dream
about doing a short term apprenticeship in a custom motorcycle shop. I
could learn so much about creative sheet metal work, and possibly those
great motorcycle paint jobs too.

I think their welding must be all tig work. I want to try that out
sometime, in someone else's shop.
