While we're onto confessions:
I have a memento of my introduction to this craft sitting in disgrace in my tool box. It's a Lufkin tape measure that has to be seen to be believed. My railing was 113" and that's what my tape measure confirmed. I went to the job site and in the process of installing, it appeared the railing was suddenly two feet too short (?!). Ok , I can add and subtract well enough. When I looked closer at the tape, '113' appeared where '133' should have been. Surprise!. I swore I double and triple checked, but it happened. Between wanting to strangle Lufkin and shoot myself I finally remedied the problem after many hours. Which brings me to another important lesson learned on another job (Is there a pattern here?): Just because it's level, plumb, straight and square doesn't mean it's right. Illusions from overlapping patterns can create an out-of-whack feeling that need to be overcompensated for. In this case, for a pitched railing down a staircase.
