See now I get all kinds of good answers.  Bigger is always better, 4" cam
rollers very hard to break...........

My next hammer project is going to use some 2" diameter Thomson rod, and
some huge recirculating linear bearings with shaft wipers.  Should be
maintenance free, and hassle free, but we shall see.........
