The steel should be polished to at least 600 grit.
then etched...
to bring out the pattern lightly sand with 1000 or finer paper. 2000 preferred..
this will touch the high spots. leaving the low spots dark.
neutralize the acid with a baking soda wash. then clean water.
then use light oil.. most any will work.. I use clove oil .. smells good..
