But there are some caveats:
Size matters, for very small taps, obviously you cannot drill them. In that case we usually use a center punch and a hammer and "shatter" the remaining tap out of the hole. For larger ones, and on steam turbines they can be as large as 7" in diameter carbide bits worked. When they wouldn't, again depending on size and location, we would anneal the tap with a cutting torch tip and then drill. And last resort, if you had a good millwright, which usually did, they would burn them out them a cutting torch. Probably a challenging option for aluminum.
