The book in Question was 'Architecture as Fine Art' by Randell Mackinson.
There are other books out on the Greene brothers but this author is reputed to be the specialist.

Is the line in parentheses the title of your reference book?  Several
years ago Fine Homebuilding magazine featured a Greene & Greene house on
the cover and showed a column detail such as you describe.  I am looking
for that book for inspiration to design some joinery in a cabin for a
client of mine.
