I tried isopropyl rubbing alcohol from the medicine cabinet to no avail, 
the same with denatured alcohol from the hardware store (is this wood 
alcohol?) with negative results.

I'm thinking of trying some acetone this morning.

It can be a real pain being cheap and stubborn.  I may just give in and go 
for Aaron's suggestion of a board from Home Depot.
