I would have a sheet metal shop shear them for me.  You can take the
sheared edge and sand it a bit and have a perfect mate.  You might
consider asking for 32 oz. sheet, don't know the thickness in inches,
but I think that non ferrous sheet is equivalent to copper wire (AWG)
This sounds like a simple job, have you considered inletting the copper
to be flush with the door face or do you want it to be proud of the
surface?  Anything done on or to the copper besides the brown finish?
