Something else you might consider is to use sprayed on cellulose
insulation.  It is basically pulverized newspapers, with a bit of borax
and a binder mixed in to hold it together.  This will make for a toasty
shop, seal every crack, and let you work in the quietest environment
possible.  If you need reassurance as to how flames work on it, ask the
guy for a sample sprayed on a piece of wood and see what a direct flame
does.  I doubt that even a bunch of sparks will ignite it.  I am setting
up a shop in an old frame warehouse that has pine floors and poplar
planks around the walls, and I wish that I could spray it.  Meanwhile,
the wood interior is so fine to look at, but oh, so cold.
